Dental insurance shouldn’t be difficult to use or too complicated to understand; however, for many patients navigating their benefits, that’s usually the case. Our team at Fairfax Dental Group strives to make using your dental insurance as easy as possible by filing claims on your behalf and walking you through your coverage. If you have any questions or concerns involving your plan, please don’t hesitate to contact us!

How Does Dental Insurance Work?

Dental insurance is a helpful tool for patients to lower their treatment costs. Every month, you pay your premium, which is like a subscription cost for your insurance, that allows you to access a number of benefits through your dental provider. Typically, dental insurance companies will cover the majority (80-100%) of the cost of preventive services, such as checkups and cleanings, routine X-rays, and gum disease treatment. If you require more extensive procedures, such as tooth extractions and dental crowns, they will usually cover between 50 and 80% of the cost of those. The exact percentage largely depends on your individual plan.

We understand that dental insurance can be confusing to navigate because there’s no set out-of-pocket expenses that you have access to in order to let you know how much you’ll need to pay after your benefits have been applied. Our dental insurance experts at Fairfax Dental Group will complete pre-authorization checks before your procedure to let you know your estimated cost.

What’s the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?

Dental insurance is prevention-focused, unlike medical insurance, which will cover at least a portion of any type of needed medical procedure. In this way, their goal is to minimize their patients’ needs for more extensive treatments by encouraging them to go to the dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings (which are usually covered at 100%). That’s why, in order to get the most out of your insurance plan, it’s important to schedule a routine preventive visit with our team every six months.

What’s the Difference Between In-Network & Out-of-Network?

Our practice is proud to be in-network with several major dental insurance companies, including:

  • Delta Dental
  • BlueCross BlueShield
  • United Concordia
  • Aetna
  • Cigna

This means that we are contracted through these companies to offer patients who are insured through them lower fees. For example, if you require a tooth-colored filling, you are likely to pay less at a dental office who is in-network with your plan than one that’s out-of-network.

Many patients already have trusted relationships with dentists, and they don’t want to stop seeing them just because they aren’t in-network with their dental insurance plan. In these cases, you don’t have to worry! Our team at Fairfax Dental Group will still help you maximize your benefits as an out-of-network patients by filing claims on your behalf and working closely with your insurance company.

We are located in the Yorktown 50 Building, within walking distance of the Mosaic District.
